September is National Preparedness Month!
In 2020, there was a record-breaking 22 weather and climate disaster events in the U.S., according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), including hurricanes and tornadoes. It’s critical that businesses are prepared for severe weather emergencies!
Have a Plan and the Right Supplies
OSHA and NOAA encourage employers to create an emergency plan, train workers on these plans, stay aware of weather forecasts and keep emergency supplies at the ready. Below is a list of some of the basics every business should consider having in their severe weather emergency kit.
- Water: A rule of thumb is one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
- Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both
- Flashlight and extra batteries
- First Aid Kit
- Whistle to signal for help
- Dust mask to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
- Cleaning wipes for sanitation
- Garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
- Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
- Manual can opener for food
- Local maps
- Cell phone with chargers, inverter or solar charger
